The abbey of Sant'Anastasia

The Abbey of S. Anastasia dates back to the eighth century AD, it was built near the point where the Alenta meets the river Calore on the Via Latina.

It was only through recent studies that it was discovered that the church was built on the ruins of an earlier building, most likely a Roman villa. In 980 the prince of the Lombards Pandolfo I decided to donate the Abbey to the monastery of San Lupolo and Zosimo and only in 1137 did it come under the control of Montecassino, as stated by some documents dating back to the reign of Lothair .

Until 1569 the Abbey of Sant’Anastasia served as a parish center, when the Pontesi moved the main religious functions to the church of Santissima Trinità .

Nowadays, those who visit the Abbey can admire its walls which have been carefully restored thanks to the support of the Superintendence of Artistic and Historical Heritage of Campania .

The plan of the Abbey is elongated and comprises a single room 20 metres long oriented from east to west with a large apse. Note the irregularity of the side walls, which means that the width of the Abbey is 9 metres on the apse side and 8.80 metres at the entrance. The room is lit by six high windows.

During the 1980 restoration, the tomb of a warrior was discovered, buried with his weapons. Even today the tomb is kept in the Museum of Salerno .

The Abbey is considered a monument of national importance .
